Many people refrain from purchasing natural stone due to its maintenance issues. This natural material is highly sensitive to chemicals which can lead to fading of the color of the tile. Hence, you need to be cautious while carrying out a cleaning session, since any wrong decision can ruin the look of your tiles and floorings.

Hence, you should avoid the given below things while cleaning and maintaining your natural stone tiles.

You should avoid cleansing agents that have statutory warning for natural stones. These cleansing agents can dampen the color and shine of your marble or granite tiles.

You should avoid cleaning the tiles with vinegar and water solution. This acidic solution is highly dangerous for the marble tiles.

You should not clear your floors and walls with help of a cleaner and water that is unsuitable for natural stone tiles.

You should not put glasses, plants and hot items on the natural tile surface. This can damage the life of the tiles.

You should clean the spills of tea, lemon, vinegar, oil, perfume, after shave etc as soon as they occur. You should clean these stains to prevent them from converting into stubborn stains that are all the more difficult to clean.

You should appoint a professional for the cleanliness and maintenance of your natural stone tiles. Never use standard floor wax or shining agents for the maintenance of your tiles.

You should avoid placing sealers on a stone that has not been cleaned. This traps dirt near its joints and lead to damage of the tiles in long run. You can also notice signs of stuffing or peeling, if an inappropriate sealer is used by the tiler.

You should always use a soft cloth or sponge for cleaning the tiles. Never rub the floor vigorously because it can lead to scratches or chips on your natural stone surface.

Hence, you should follow the above guidelines while maintaining the life of your stone walls and floorings.

Natural stone is a popular tiling material that is manufactured under the earth crust. The material is created due to varying temperature and pressure inside the earth, which leads to the presence of varied texture and properties of the natural stone. However, marble, granite, quartz and limestone are the most popular tiling material for household construction.

However, every natural stone has a specific feature and property that adds value to their beautiful designs and texture. For example, the marble is an extraordinary tiling material that is manufactured inside the womb of mother earth which further adds breathtaking beauty to your floors and walls in long run. You can use them to redecorate your house entrance, floors, living room, kitchen, bathroom walls and fireplaces. Moreover, marble tiles add sophistication and class to your surroundings.

Secondly, there are granite tiles that are highly popular due to their durability and extraordinary designs. These tiles have some excellent properties like stain resistance, water resistance, abrasion resistant and minimum maintenance cost. All these properties make them an ideal tiling material for designing kitchen slabs, bathrooms, classy desktops and bar tops etc. You can also design a beautiful counter top or kitchen back splash to add a royal feel to your walls and surroundings.

Limestone is another popular natural stone that’s favorite among builders and homemakers. This tiling material is available in uniform color without any defects in the texture which is responsible for its rustic and natural look of the stone. Therefore, people use them to design their window sills, wall cladding, doors and gardens etc.

Some people also purchase man made natural stone known as quartz for their house decorations. This stone is manufactured with help of quartz crystals, resins and colors which are responsible for its varied designs and vibrant colors. Hence, you can purchase them from a shopkeeper that sells building materials and decorate your households.

So, utilize the positive aspects of these natural stones and recreate a unique and elegant design for your homes.

Stone lives through its haptic. Customers not only want to see a stone, but also touch it – important to know when it comes to marketing finishes.

Whether a stone appears hard or soft is not just a question of petrography. Marble can feel hard, granite silky matt – depending on how the surface has been finished. Almost anything is possible. Coarsely honed or jet-blasted, highly polished or roughened with a microfine finish by a laser beam. The decisive factor is what the stone is to be used for and the visual impact it is to create.

Apart from polished surfaces, marks from the finishing process are now en vogue again. This makes every slab unique. A structured surface shows that the material does not end on the surface, but has depth; in other words, it is matter and not just decoration.

Traditional processing techniques like honing or bush-hammering are still available, but the surface relief is very rough and is mainly suitable for accentuating walls. Honed or bush-hammered floors are non-slip, but difficult to clean. Artificially aged “antiqued” stones are an alternative. The slabs are sanded in a rotating drum by adding quartz or coarse ballast. Distressed edges improve the rustic look. A final coating of wax restores the colour of the material.

Grinding is one of the most frequently used processes. Despite modern machines and abrasives, there is still no standard or simple test facility for surface roughness. Ground surfaces always show grinding marks under opposing light conditions, also differences in gloss depending on mineral content and distribution.
The most attractive side of a natural stone is the polished surface, which brings to light the whole variety of colours and structure. Normally, the surface is polished to such an extent that no more grinding marks are visible. The advantage of the polished surface apart from the appearance is the best possible cleaning, but the necessary non-slip properties are not achieved.

One of the most common forms of finishing hard stones containing quartz is flaming. The flamed surface has particularly good non-slip properties, but is difficult to clean, especially indoors. Not every stone is suitable for flaming and colour changes may occur, depending on material. Yellow granites change to a reddish colour, others turn yellow or grey. To roughen up the surface without changing the colour, stones susceptible to colour changes are blasted using a water jet. The resulting appearance is not comparable with any traditional finishing process. The surface structure varies according to water pressure and throughput speed.

Brushed surfaces are currently experiencing a boom as an alternative to grinding. The surface has a soft velvet touch. Depending on the process, the gloss effects and visual properties are just as variable as grinding. Brushing is often preceded by a coarser finishing process such as flaming. After the coarse roughing, the rough layer is smoothed using brushes with metal or plastic bristles containing abrasive grains. The brushes can be mounted on conventional production plants. The advantage is a soft, living surface structure that is easier to clean than flamed surfaces.

A look into the future

Trends for 2010

Nothing in life is more constant than change. This applies to the way we work, where we travel to and what we buy, but also to how we live. Whether classic-modern or country-style furniture is preferred – everyone follows fashion trends consciously or unconsciously. Christian Hehenberger, Director of the Institute for Marketing and Trend Analyses in Gutau, Austria, is studying the economic, political and social changes within the next ten years. In his book (German language) entitled »The future belongs to the designers«, he proposes theories on how we will build and live in the period from 2010/15 onwards. His theories consider global trends as well as the climatic shifts towards warmer winters and summers.

Hehenberger calls the result a concept for living space and describes on a room-by-room basis which rooms will become more important and which less important. A few examples: Guests are no longer welcomed in the hall, but in the more spacious reception room. Extensive cooking for food preparation only will become less important, as food will be increasingly purchased in precooked form and only warmed up.

The winner in the kitchen area is the prestigious show kitchen, in which guests experience live how the host or hostess cooks. The bathroom will no longer be the place for relaxation, but the indoor wellness oasis. Overall, the amount of space required will increase by a few square metres. With the »60+« generation in mind, the floors will be non-slip. Light effects will radiate a feeling of well-being. All the furnishings will be of high quality and show it.

Trends can also be derived for the natural stone industry. Right at the top of the list is the tendency to more prestige and enjoyment at home, especially in the bathroom and kitchen. Many a customer buys a kitchen worktop of stone not because of its easy care and durability, but as an expression of luxury. Finishes in which the new »soft« touch is noticeable are very popular among some buyers. Room fountains, which gain importance as air humidifiers due to the increased use of air conditioners, are also practical. The natural stone industry can also profit from the changes, if it adjusts to them. Particularly if it adds the terms »enjoyment«, »sensuousness« and »joy of living« to its repertoire of sales arguments like ecology and economy and makes these a permanent feature of customer advice.
